Stephen Beer standing for CSM Chair

The Christian Socialist Movement is holding elections. I am standing for chair.

There is so much potential in CSM, and with my experience and skills, I believe I can help us realise it.

A special welcome if you came here having read my election statement. This is a general political blog that will give you a sense of what I am interested in and involved with, as well as my CSM work. Please do continue to visit it to learn more about my vision for CSM, for Christian action in the Labour Movement in general, and for my views on the political scene.

Here is my election statement:

I can provide the experienced leadership to see us – together – realise CSM’s potential.

You know I am firmly committed to our values, having led our biggest ever consultation, engaging directly with members over three years. Our new values statement was overwhelmingly approved by AGM and membership ballot. I want us to build on it to influence politics ahead of the next General Election, especially with the role and identity of faith in Britain being debated.

First we must sort out our finances, which have been put under strain. An executive committee plan is being implemented with the changes we all want to see, but we need strategic leadership. I will be a highly proactive chair, drawing on considerable financial, political and management experience.

· Vice Chair 2004-7
· Treasurer 2001-4 – leaving strong financial position
· Represent CSM (articles, radio, TV, church meetings)
· Lead new policy review; visit branches
· Engage in Christian Muslim political dialogue
· Chair, Vauxhall Constituency Labour Party; Parliamentary Candidate, Wantage, 2001
· Senior Fund Manager, Central Finance Board of the Methodist Church
· Member, All Souls Church, Langham Place, London

A CSM chair must serve all who call themselves Christian Socialists, promoting equality and integrity, empowering members to make a difference, encouraging a vibrant executive committee, and preventing factionalism.

My vision is for an active and effective CSM: a critical friend of our Labour Government, fearlessly promoting Christian Socialism in politics and church.

This is the vision I will pursue as your chair.
