Government announces plan to 'isolate and defeat extremists'

Communities and Local Government Secretary of State Ruth Kelly has announced an action plan to increase work with Muslim communities.

The news release can be found at http://www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1002882&PressNoticeID=2405 .

The government plans to work through the Charities Commission to 'strengthen leadership and governance' in mosques. It will also back projects designed to help build 'stronger civic and religious leadership' and organise leadership training courses.

That extremism (of any sort that threatens peoples lives) should be tackled is not in doubt. These measures have potential to provide alternative models of engagement for people.

They will have potential if they exist in genuine partnership with individuals and communities, rather than appear to be imposed, of course. That is the real challenge. We are not dealing with outsiders, we are working together as fellow citizens for the common good.
